Call for Artists.jpg

NOW MORE THAN EVER, THE WORLD NEEDS ART.

In times of strife and struggle, people become even more insular, even more self-absorbed. Art as the thing that sparks aesthetic engagement has never been more important.

The lowest level of aesthetic engagement is putting yourself in the story of the art, reacting in some sort of emotional way. It’s that immersive experience, right here, right now, and the awareness of how a piece makes us feel that

embodies the practice of mindfulness and offers us many psychological benefits. For example, mindfulness has been demonstrated to sharpen focus, decrease anxiety and depression, and improve overall well-being.

Now more than ever, the world needs art.

Thank you for your interest in selling your art on our website.

Please read our philosophy, our focus, partnering our talents, and the standard formats for submitting the

ARTIST APPLICATION.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Artists & Makers understands that technology is providing countless possibilities
to give consumers exactly what they need in the moment. As devices become seamless and
ubiquitous, they and we are becoming increasingly inseparable.

Artists that understand this need a partner that has the talent and abilities to leverage
the change in the world around them. They are in need of curation and platforms to support
their livelihood. Our strategies and marketing across all digital, physical, and communication touchpoints underpin artists' continued and growing prosperity.

OUR FOCUS

We help artists reach a broader audience; exposing your work to more buyers.

We focus on what we do best, so you can focus on what you do best, art.

We support our artists with a virtual gallery for real art along with active, direct marketing, email

marketing campaigns, advertising, and social media; all focused on selling our Artists’ work. Our team is

always seeking new ways to reach potential buyers and encourage them to buy the work they love.

As one of our artists, you will have your own Artist Profile page on shopartistsandmakers.com,

sharing your artist statement, resume of achievements and awards, and artwork. Your work will be

searchable from within our site, and may be featured in collections through our online marketing efforts.

We will also market your work through our search engine marketing program. Your work may also be

chosen to be featured in our email marketing, social media, on our website homepage and

landing pages, and through print publicity materials.

Our focus will always be your success.

PARTNERING OUR TALENTS

We want to partner our talents with yours; we want to be able to provide you the

curation and platforms to promote and sell your work.

Fee Structure. The first year membership fee will be waived once an artist is accepted. Thereafter, we charge an annual membership fee of $300 to help offset onboarding costs, customer service and site maintenance.

This fee can be paid all at once, or in installments of $25 per month for one year.

Commissions. Artists and Makers takes a 25% commission on any sales we generate, much like

a traditional gallery. Artists set their own prices, ensuring that they earn what they want for each piece.

Shipping. Artists are responsible for shipping their artwork.

Sales Tax. Artists and Makers will collect and pay the appropriate Sales Tax

1099.  Artists will receive a 1099 for all sales made on shopartistsandmakers.com

BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Professional Quality Images
Beautiful photography is absolutely essential for selling your artwork online—and a prerequisite for having your work featured in marketing materials such as emails. We recommend having your work photographed by a professional with experience shooting artwork in your medium. The goal of these photographs is to give customers the best possible view of your piece. There should be nothing to distract viewers from the work. The piece should be well-lit to highlight its best features, without hard shadows or excessive flash reflections. Ensure that your photographer uses a clean, neutral background (e.g. a white, black, or gradated sweep), rather than a textured backdrop or elaborate room setting. If your work is 3-D, ask your photographer to take shots from several angles; having alternate images is very helpful for customers. Every image file should be: • A high-quality JPG • Standard RGB color (not CMYK) • A minimum of 72 DPI • Under 10MB in file size • At least 2400 pixels on the longest side • Not interpolated (or "upsized")
  • Your Artist Statement in Our Standard Format.
Our Standard Format Our customers love hearing about you—so we feature your artist statement on your Artist Profile page. To give customers a great, consistent experience, we ask all of our artists to follow a standard format when writing their artist statements: four sections that focus on different aspects of your practice, plus a list of selected exhibitions, awards, and collections. Within this framework, feel free to let your personality shine! Focus on what makes your work unique and why customers should get excited about it. Note that all statements are subject to approval. Each statement will be reviewed by our merchandising and/or copywriting team, and may be lightly edited. We make every attempt to respect your wishes and retain your voice in this process. Artist Statement Overview Artist Quote A compelling remark in the first person. This is the first thing customers will see on your Artist Profile Page: it should grab their attention and pique their interest. It can be poignant, funny, thoughtful, intriguing...whatever conveys your personality and the spirit of your work. Artist Statement The "why" of your work. Give customers a sense of who you are as an artist and what your work is about. Why do you make art? What fascinates you about your subject matter or medium? Where do you find inspiration? What ideas are you exploring in your art? Technique The "how" of your work. Describe the techniques and materials you use to make your art. Do you work within any artistic traditions? Do you have a signature technique? What makes your approach unique? We encourage you to include interesting details while avoiding overly technical explanations. Training Your background. Describe how you got to where you are today. Include career milestones such as degrees, workshops, apprenticeships, and residencies (and if you are self-taught, mention that). Include relevant life experiences that have impacted who you are as an artist. You may also include biographical details, such as where you are from, your family, and noteworthy hobbies and passions. Selected Exhibitions, Awards, Guild Membership This section is similar to what might be on your artist resume. You may list up to 5 total exhibitions and awards. We recommend prioritizing those that are the most recent and/or the most prestigious. Include exhibitions at museums, art centers, public galleries, and juried art shows. Do not include private gallery exhibitions.
  • A Brief Description of Each Piece with Complete Information.
Though a beautiful image can sometimes sell a work of art on its own, a complete, accurate description is often times just as essential. Our customers not only need to know the materials and size of your piece, they also love hearing about your techniques and inspiration. Though the specifics vary from medium to medium, the following should be included in every product description: • All materials that make up the piece (as specifically as possible) • All pertinent dimensions (height, width, depth, etc.) • Techniques used to make the piece • The ideas or inspiration behind the work, or any special information relevant to its creation
